About Op. Dr. Serpil KIRIM
I have been a physician for 15 years, and I have been in the world of gynecology and obstetrics for 13 years.
I was born on 26.09.1980 in Uşak. I am married and mother of 2 children. I completed primary and secondary school in Uşak, high school in Isparta Süleyman Demirel Science High School, and medical school at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine. I completed my specialization in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Şişli Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital.
During my residency, I started to question births and birth styles. I always wondered how we could support pregnant women to facilitate births or complete this story with positive emotions.
I became pregnant with my daughter Zeynep in the 2nd year of my assistantship. I wanted to bring my daughter into the world naturally, as much as possible without intervention and with positive emotions. For this, I started my work during the pregnancy process.
At that time, there were no trainings, we created a system together with our dear midwives in our hospital. I determined my birth team. My birth team consisted of the people who could make me feel the best and give me positive support in this process. I gave birth to my daughter with a normal delivery.
I stayed together as much as possible. It made me feel so good to meet my daughter like this. I started to think why all pregnant women should not be reunited with their little lambs like this. Postpartum processes led me to research on secure attachment and my researches converged on skin-to-skin contact.
In fact, life was all about attachments and those who started life with secure attachment were always one step ahead. The first step was to catch the 3 contact points of attachment, skin, voice and eye contact, as soon as we opened our eyes to life. As a birth supporter, I was actually very far away from these.
I started to research how the world views birth and if births can be done in this way. While my research led me to hypnobirthing birth, Lamaze birth, active birth, hypnosis birth, my path crossed with Istanbul Birth Academy in Turkey.

After my specialization, I started compulsory service in Cihanbeyli district of Konya and became pregnant with my 2nd lamb Yusuf. When I saw the effect of the processes I learned with my first lamb on my bonding process with Yusuf, I made my final decision.
I would meet with expectant parents before or during pregnancy, share the processes with them at the very beginning, support them to prepare for their birth and parenting processes, and then support their birth.
At this stage of my professional career, I completed 9 months of training at Istanbul Birth Academy, authorized by Lamaze International, Hypnobirthing and Active Birth, to become a Birth Preparation trainer and Breath instructor.
This process was like starting my own inner journey. Immediately afterwards, I completed my IVF specialization at Koç University American Hospital in order to support families even before conception.
I have completed Homeopathy, phytotherapy, aromatherapy, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) and Hypnosis trainings for holistic treatment approaches to women’s health.
Although water birth has been practiced all over the world for centuries, it is not a well-known method in our country and unfortunately it is not included in our specialty training curriculum. When I witnessed how pregnant women relax in water, I received water birth training from Barbara Harper, the founder of Waterbirth International and one of the pioneers of water birth.
I realized that as I informed my pregnant women, their anxiety decreased. I started to give birth preparation and breathing exercises, pilates, yoga, parenting preparation, breastfeeding, baby care, first aid, puerperium support trainings regularly, saying that knowledge is the antidote to fear.
While dealing with the birth fears of pregnant women and emotion discharge techniques, I realized that the basis of the event actually goes back a long time and was triggered during pregnancy and birth, and then I decided that families should be supported with individual psychotherapy. Thus, my path intersected with holistic psychotherapy.
I am currently continuing my Holistic Psychotherapy Training, which includes theoretical, formulation, supervision and hypnosis trainings from Psychiatrist Dr. Tahir Özakkaş, a member of the board of directors of the Society for the Exploration of Psyhotherapy Integration (SEPI) and President of Istanbul Psychotherapy Institute.
Again, while listening to the concerns and fears of my pregnant women and patients, I have seen that factors related to sexual life and family dynamics come to the forefront. Although some of the problems related to sexual life have psychological causes, a considerable number of them are caused by organic problems.
Thus, my path crossed with cosmetic gynecology genital aesthetic trainings. I started to support sexual problems and urogynecological problems caused by multiple and difficult childbirth, aging or the effect of hormones with surgical procedures.
During IVF treatment, I saw that a holistic approach to infertile couples and adding complementary supportive therapies to the process increased the success rates. I also received post-specialty training on hysteroscopy and laparoscopy techniques that we frequently use in IVF.
The physician-patient trust relationship forms the basis of treatment. Every patient and pregnant woman deserves to be followed and treated with due care, adequate information and evidence-based information. I have been interested in law since my university years. As a result of my research, my path crossed with Health Law.
I am currently continuing my PhD program in Health Law at Istanbul Medipol University. With the principle that knowledge multiplies as it is shared, I started to give lectures to medical faculty students as an Assistant Lecturer at Istinye University while saying how I can transfer my knowledge and experience to my colleagues. I am currently still working as an Assistant Lecturer at Nişantaşı University.
All the trainings I have received and am receiving and my life experience have enabled me to approach my patients and pregnant women holistically. The World Health Organization defines health as follows: ‘Health is not only the absence of disease, but a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being’ and this definition has become my principle.
Each training changed my perspective on pregnant women, patients and life. I completed my own inner journey on this path that I started as a physician.
With the same enthusiasm and excitement as the first day, I continue to touch the lives of my pregnant women and patients with a holistic approach accompanied by evidence-based information…
