Genital area lightening or whitening is a procedure performed with lasers, chemical bleaches, or applications such as ozone and PRP. This process whitens the darkened areas in the genital region. Darkening can occur for various reasons. The laser procedure causes the old skin to peel off and reveals a young new skin underneath.
In the outer genital area, the vulva, especially on the inner labia covered with hair, color changes, darkening, and localized spots may occur. To eliminate this problem, genital whitening treatments are applied.
Why does the outer genital area darken?
The outer genital area darkens over time for various reasons. Its natural color can deteriorate with time. This causes aesthetic discomfort for women. The following factors play a role in the darkening of the outer genital area:
- Estrogen hormone
- Sunlight exposure
- Naturally having dark skin
- Pregnancy and hormonal changes during pregnancy
- Use of birth control pills (oral contraceptives)
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Certain hormonal disorders
- Genital waxing or laser hair removal
Why is laser whitening done?
Darkening of the genital area negatively affects women psychologically. It causes a lack of self-confidence during intercourse and shame about the genital area. The ideal appearance is pinkish and plump.
The laser procedure causes the old skin to peel off and reveals a young new skin underneath.
Laser whitening treatment targets the hips, perianal area, perineum, inner tension, and outer vaginal areas to lighten skin tone. The treatment does not require general anesthesia. It usually lasts about 30 minutes. Patients should avoid applying creams, shaving the area, or using a tanning bed for 3 days before the treatment.
How is laser whitening performed?
Laser whitening of the genital area is completed within 20-30 minutes. The procedure is done under local anesthesia or sedation and is quick. After laser whitening, the thermal effect of the laser causes the top skin layer, called the epidermis, to peel off, revealing new, young skin underneath. This removes the dark color and results in vibrant, glowing, and pinkish skin.
Typically, 2-3 sessions are enough for effective whitening. If necessary, more sessions can be performed. The results of laser whitening usually appear clearly about one month after treatment.
