Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure typically performed to reduce the labia minora – the folds of skin surrounding the urethra and vagina. This procedure addresses problems with the inner and outer lips in the vaginal area.
These lips may be sagging, asymmetrical, or excessively large. This can cause both aesthetic and functional issues. Excess skin may droop or become trapped in underwear, leading to discomfort during exercise, physical activity, or sexual intercourse.
Labiaplasty is a surgical operation performed to reduce or enlarge the size of the labia. The surgery can improve the appearance of the inner and outer lips, reduce physical discomfort, and enhance sexual pleasure. The outer lips are called the labia majora.
These folds are larger and fleshier, protecting the external genital organs and becoming covered with pubic hair after puberty. The inner lips are known as the labia minora. These skin folds help protect the urethra and vagina from infections.
If these lips are larger than normal, they may enter the vaginal canal during intercourse, causing pain and increasing the risk of infection.
Why Is Labiaplasty Performed?
Reducing the size of the labia minora is one of the most common reasons for undergoing this procedure. Excess lip tissue can fold, become trapped in clothing, or increase the risk of infection due to sagging.
This leads to physical discomfort and irritation, especially during exercise, physical activities (such as cycling or running), and sexual intercourse.
Excess tissue also makes personal hygiene more difficult and can lead to urinary tract infections. Labiaplasty may also be performed to achieve a younger appearance after childbirth or aging.
One side may be longer or shaped differently than the other. In such cases, the procedure may be performed to correct asymmetry of the labia minora or labia majora. It also improves comfort, confidence, and sexual health during close intimacy.
What Are the Advantages of Labiaplasty?
Having large or sagging inner and outer lips in the genital area negatively affects self-esteem and self-confidence in many women. It can lead to negative perceptions about wearing bikinis, tight clothing, or engaging in sexual activity with a partner.
After the labiaplasty procedure, women regain lost self-confidence. It helps resolve sexual issues. In addition, many women with enlarged labia experience discomfort during intercourse due to tissue friction. Correcting the tissue can prevent these issues and improve sexual confidence.
